Barney's Beanery to Host Reprise of Legendary Artist Ed Kienholz's 1969 "Barter Show", Part of the City of West Hollywood's "It All Started Here" Salute to Pacific Standard Time

"If there had been a flash grease-fire at Barney's Beanery circa 1960, the entire L.A. art scene would have been wiped out!" - Ken Price, "Cool School"

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif., April 5, 2012 -- The City of West Hollywood's PST...It All Started Here brings legendary artist Ed Kienholz "back" to one of his old hangouts, Barney's Beanery in a unique bartering event, Perpetual Conceptual: Echoes of Eugenia Butler, Tuesday, April 10, from 7 – 10pm, presented by Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) and Corazon del Sol, gallerist Eugenia Butler Sr.'s granddaughter.

The sky's the limit on bartering in this tribute to Kienholz's original Barter Show, held 43 years ago. A group of contemporary artists have created 21 works to be displayed for barter, on the walls of the 91-year-old venerable roadhouse which was popular gathering spot with artists in the 60s. To capture the flair of the original event, the artists' favorite libation, "the Boilermaker" (beer with a shot of whiskey) will be the offered to those bartering.

The art pieces to be bartered are currently on display at consecutive storefronts at 8126-8132 Santa Monica Blvd.

The 1969 Barter took place originally at the Eugenia Butler Gallery on LaCienega Blvd. Then, accepted bartering items at the unique art auction included the trading of 2 horses for a watercolor. "In the spirit of Kienholz, we hope to see some unique items being traded once again," said Andrew Campbell, Cultural Affairs Administrator, for the City of West Hollywood.

As part of the Los Angeles art scene in the 1960's, Ed Kienholz memorialized Barney's Beanery, the legendary celebrity hangout/diner with his large three dimensional installation, "The Beanery", currently part of a collection at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

"If there had been a flash grease-fire at Barney's Beanery in West Hollywood circa 1960, the entire L.A. art scene would have been wiped out," artist Ken Price was quoted as saying in "The Cool School," a PBS documentary about the beginnings of LA's postwar art scene.
