Louis Armstrong's Final Recorded Trumpet Performance To Be Released to Public for First Time

WASHINGTON, March 29, 2012 -- What if your favorite musician could return from the great beyond and play one last set that would, for a moment, make his music live again? And what if the music were new – something you have never heard before? It would be a moment to savor.

Well for those of you who are waiting for Elvis or John Lennon to return, you might have to keep waiting. But for those of you who long to hear the music of the greatest trumpeter of all time, Louis Armstrong, just one more time your dreams may be answered. And you should come to the National Press Club on April 27 for what is sure to be a memorable and historic occasion. On that day there will be a news conference followed by a panel discussion followed by a reception. Details will be released as the date gets closer.

Officials from the National Press Club, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and the Louis Armstrong Foundation will announce their agreement to release a recording made on January 29, 1971 in the Ballroom of the National Press Club. The live recording is one of the last times Armstrong played his trumpet in public and is believed to be his last recorded trumpet performance. The recording was made into a limited edition record with only 300 copies most of which have vanished into attics. For several years a determined group of Press Club members have been working with their partners at Smithsonian Folkways Recordings to bring the music to the public.

Now, with the help of the Louis Armstrong Foundation, the moment has arrived.
On April 24, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the nonprofit record label of the national museum, will release "Satchmo at the National Press Club: Red Beans and Rice-ly Yours" on CD and digital download via www.folkways.si.edu and retailers including iTunes and Amazon as well as the streaming services. The album release is part of the Smithsonian Institution's celebration of the 11th annual Jazz Appreciation Month.

Armstrong agreed to perform at the 1971 inaugural party of incoming National Press Club President Vernon Louviere who was a Washington correspondent but a native of Louisiana. At the time he was booked, Mr. Armstrong's health was poor. He had not played trumpet for much of 1970 and his shows were mostly 10 minutes of singing. So the Press Club crowd expected to hear Louis sing a couple of songs. But Armstrong packed his horn when he traveled to Washington. He was feeling better and ready to play.

January 29, 1971 was a gala evening at the Press Club. The master of ceremonies for the event was the British Journalist David Frost. The crowd of journalists, dressed in black tie, had a real sense that they were about to witness history. Louis responded to the crowd's enthusiasm with more than 30 minutes of spirited singing, scat and to everyone's great surprise, trumpet. His trumpet was only to be recorded two other times: during a taped television show with David Frost; and on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson before a studio audience. It is believed that neither was turned into a recording offered to the public.

Lifecrowd Launches Out of MuckerLab, Rolls Out in Two New Cities

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 23, 2012 -- Social activities discovery site Lifecrowd has become the first startup to emerge out of the Los Angeles-based MuckerLab incubator/accelerator program as the company today announced its official launch out of public Beta and expansion into three new regions, San Francisco, Orange County and San Diego.

On Aging:
"Let me tell you the best part about getting older. The best part is that I'm still here and, because the end is in sight, I treasure it all more. That's why I don't worry about crying in a scene anymore. Now it comes easily. I know the emotion's all there."

"You have to live life that way, you know? Take risks. Do things you can't imagine. 'Cause hey, why not, right?"

"Slowing down isn't something I relate to at all. The goal is to continue in good and bad, all of it. To continue to express myself, particularly. To feel the world. To explore. To be with people. To take things far. To risk. To love. I just want to know more and see more."

On the Possibility of Plastic Surgery:

"I haven't had it, but never say never. Because when you do, you are definitely going to go there. I said I would never have intercourse before I was married, and I did. I said I would never go to a psychiatrist, and I spent much of my life in psychoanalysis. I've done all kinds of things I said I wouldn't do and, of course, now I'm glad. Thrilled."

On Her Love Life:

"I think it was just my whole life. How I responded first to boys and then to men. It had nothing to do with reality."

"Relationships are hard. You're lucky if you find someone."

In regards to romance, "It's not something I can visualize right now. The best relationships develop out of friendships. That's the shame. At this stage I don't correlate any of the friendships I have with sex, and, honestly, once you bring sex into a friendship—Ooh! Whew! Oh!—that's a slippery slope into disaster."

On Parenting:

"As a parent I provide all I can, but I think in the best possible scenario you need to have a man."

"At this point in my life, everything's throwing me punches from left and right, but it's certainly been an amazing adventure."

"I'm very aware that my dad died when he was 68, and my mother was in her early 70s when her brain really started to go. When I think about my kids in their 20s and 30s, and me in my 70s and 80s, I worry about that, definitely. I want to be there for them. I want my body and mind to stay strong, and to share all these life lessons. But I also know they need to have the freedom and independence to learn on their own."

On Her Battle with Bulimia:

"With bulimia, I never expected sympathy or for people to understand. What I cared about was the secret I kept. It felt like a burden. I never told my mother."

"It's amazing how the dark secrets inside us don't matter much to the outside world."

On Her Dream Role:

"A really out-there role where I let it all hang out. Get totally enraged. Go to an extreme. I have not really had that opportunity, and I hope it will happen."

Patrick Stewart Will Emcee 71stth Annual Peabody Awards

ATHENS, Georgia (March 21, 2012) – Sir Patrick Stewart, Peabody Award-winning star of stage and screen, Shakespeare plays and science-fiction blockbusters, will be the host of the 71st Annual George Foster Peabody Awards ceremony on Monday, May 21, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
 
“Patrick Stewart, the first actor to host the Peabody Awards Presentation Luncheon, brings a career that perfectly illustrates the breadth of the Peabody Award,” said Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards at the University of Georgia. “He starred in Star Trek: The Next Generation, which was recognized with a Peabody in 1987. Just last year, he gave us his superb Macbeth, another Peabody Award production. The winners of the Peabody Awards for original broadcast, cablecast and Webcast programs presented in 2011 will be announced via Webcast on April 4 from the University of Georgia.
 
An internationally respected actor known for successfully bridging the gap between the theatrical world of the Shakespearean stage and contemporary film and television, Sir Patrick Stewart has demonstrated his versatility in a wide range of projects.
 
 
Stewart has a long standing relationship with the Royal Shakespeare Company and is an Honorary Associate Artist, having been made an Associate Artist in 1967. With the RSC he has played roles such as King John, Shylock, Henry IV, Cassius, Titus Andronicus and Oberon. He has also starred in many contemporary works with the RSC, including plays by Tom Stoppard, Edward Bond, Howard Barker and David Rudkin. Stewart recently completed a run at London’s Young Vic in the lead role of William Shakespeare in a revival of Bond’s 1973 play Bingo.
 
Alongside his extensive theatre work, Patrick has had an enormously successful film and television career. He reprised his role as Captain Jean Luc Picard in the hit Next Generation theatrical films and portrayed Professor Xavier in the popular X-Men movie series. He has voiced characters in such animated films as Steamboy, Chicken Little, The Game of Their Lives and Bambi 2. He recently provided the narration for the natural history documentary Earth.
 
Stewart’s many honors include an Emmy for directing a Next Generation episode called A Fistful of Datas and Officer of the British Empire (O.B.E.), conferred on him by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 2001. He received a knighthood in the New Year Honour’s list in 2010 for his services to Drama.
 
The Peabodys, the oldest awards in broadcasting, are considered among the most prestigious and selective prizes in electronic media. The Peabody Awards recognize excellence and meritorious work by radio and television stations, networks, webcasters, producing organizations and individuals. Tommy Bolin was the quintessential guitar prodigy who focused his talents within the burgeoning rock/metal scenes of the early 70's as well as mastered a highly lauded jazz fusion technique catching the attention of rock tastemakers and guitar legend peers. It was just a matter of time before Bolin was making a name for himself playing on projects as diverse as Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" project (considered one of the great jazz fusion recordings of all time), replacing Joe Walsh in the James Gang, playing session work on seminal fusion projects by Moxy and Alphonse Mouzon, to replacing Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. With the release of his second solo album "Private Eyes", what should have been a red letter moment for Bolin, opening up for Jeff Beck in Miami, sadly turned tragic as Bolin was found dead of an overdose shortly after the gig.
